Individual Casework

Support focused on individual children/young people when someone has concerns about how they are getting on in their education setting.  There may be concerns, for example, about the young person’s learning, emotional wellbeing or about how they are finding other aspects of school, such as friendships and relationships.

A consultation approach will be followed, meaning that we (myself, parent/carer and school staff) will work collaboratively to better our understanding of the situation and make a plan of actions/next steps.  My belief is that parents and school staff hold the expertise in the young person and context (e.g. the school system) and the EP can support reflection, consideration of different perspectives, understanding and change.  For example, though questioning, sharing ideas from psychological theories and research, and carrying out specific assessment, as appropriate.

Individual casework will likely involve:

  • A joint meeting/consultation with the EP, parents and a member of staff who knows the child well.

  • Further information gathering/assessment by the EP if felt to be helpful.  For example, observation at school or home, assessment of learning skills, attainment and approaches, or of social and emotional needs.

  • A one-to-one meeting with the child/young person to understand their perspectives.

  • A report summarising discussions, assessments and the next steps/actions planned together.

  • A follow-up/review meeting (at an agreed time interval, usually around 6-7 weeks) and short summary record of the discussion.

Consultation meetings in schools

These would typically be 60 minutes long and focused on developing understanding of situations regarding individual pupils or groups of pupils.  They can be booked as standalone meetings or a series of 2,3 etc to allow opportunity for review cycles.  Consultation mornings can be arranged in schools to include multiple meetings in one EP visit.  When specific pupils are to be discussed, parent/carer consent is required and I would typically encourage that parents/carers are invited to join the meeting and be an integral part of the consultation process.

These can be delivered virtually.

Staff supervision
(individual and group)

As well as reflecting on and developing understanding of work-related issues (which may relate to individual pupils and groups of pupils), I also encourage that space is given to reflection on the emotional factors involved in teaching and learning, and the personal-professional dynamic, with a core aim of supporting staff wellbeing.  Supervision approaches are informed by both systemic and psychoanalytic theories and can draw on structured or semi-structured frameworks as desired.

Parent Consultations

A safe, confidential and non-judgemental space for parents to share and reflect on challenges they are experiencing.  I will ask questions to support reflection and develop our understanding of what is going on for you and your child.  If desired we can together come up with some approaches/steps to try, to make the situation feel more manageable.
